Model for a Single Document for Assessing Occupational Risks in the maritime environment

All occupational risks on board the vessels concerned must be recorded in a Single Occupational Risk Assessment Document (DUERP). This document will include a list of the risks identified, a risk hierarchy system (generally with 3 levels of risk), an analysis of the level of risk and an action plan explaining the means implemented to eliminate or reduce the risk.

Why do you need to assess occupational risks?

The Single Occupational Risk Assessment Document (DUERP) is a legal obligation for all employers, including those working in the maritime environment. It is regulated by the Labour Code and is intended to assess the occupational risks to which workers are exposed in the course of their duties (paragraph III a] of article L230-2 and article R.230-1 (decree of 5 November 2001) of the Labour Code).

In the maritime environment, occupational hazards can be many and varied, including risks related to navigation, vessel manoeuvres, weather conditions, fire safety and risks related to hazardous products. These risks can have serious consequences for the health and safety of workers, and can even lead to accidents at work or occupational illnesses.

The DUERP in the maritime environment makes it possible to identify these risks and put in place appropriate preventive measures to protect workers' health and safety. It also makes it possible to raise workers' awareness of the risks incurred in their working environment, and to give them the means to work in complete safety.

The risk assessment will also enable new crew members to be instructed before they start work on your vessel. New seafarers are more exposed to risks. That's why it's so important that they are well informed about the risks associated with their future tasks and working environment on your ship.

In short, the DUERP in the maritime environment is an essential tool for guaranteeing worker safety and ensuring that the employer complies with its legal obligations in terms of occupational risk prevention.

What are the benefits of introducing a single document for assessing occupational risks in the maritime environment?

Once you know the risks on board, you're in a position to deal with them. This means you can carry out your work more safely. You are also in a position to decide on technical, organisational or training preventive measures.

A good knowledge of the circumstances of work-related accidents that have already occurred on board will also contribute to the choice of measures. To do this, keep a copy of the questionnaires to be attached to the accident declaration, and analyse the causes of the most frequent and most serious accidents. When taking on a new crew member, the shipowner (or his representative) and the new recruit must consider each task in the light of the health risks involved. The shipowner (or his representative) must do the same for each crew member who has not taken part in the risk assessment. With the Document Unique d'Évaluation des Risques Professionnels en milieu maritime, you have a guide to help you raise awareness of the risks associated with your job and the specific features of your ship.

Implementing the DUERP in the maritime environment has benefits for both workers and employers. It helps to improve the quality of life at work, strengthen the prevention culture, comply with legal obligations and enhance the company's image.
